God Takes Care of Us

[We’ve been sick; Floyd’s been traveling; the roof leaks. But you’ve been waiting to find out what happened to Floyd when the train swallowed him up.]

While the boys and I were still standing open-mouthed on the train platform, Floyd was trying to wrench the door open and jump out. An alert conductor saw him at once and stopped him.

Swallowed by a Train

Christmas. One of the things we “discovered”in language school was so obvious: German language school is full of “foreigners.” The people we went to class with were from Liberia, America, Canada, Iran, Japan, etc. It was harder to get to know Germans, although there were some who offered hospitality to students.

One of the students we got to know was Mary. She was a theology student from Gettysburg University, learning German so she could read German theology books. We invited her to spend Christmas with us, as she seemed to have no one else.

We bought a small tree, and scoured the area for lights. They were nowhere to be found. (The following year we learned that everyone uses real candles, and they think electric lights are garish and cheap.) Continue reading

On the advice of a teacher in a church in Denver, we drove to Portland, Oregon, so that Floyd could attend Western Seminary. Our goals while in Portland were: a. to build a strong family foundation; b. to find a church home and to commit ourselves to it; and c. to attend seminary as time and money allowed.
